PEORIA, Ariz. — The Padres beat the Chicago Cubs 3-0 on Friday night at Peoria Stadium.

Batter’s box:  Jake Cronenworth was 1-for-2 with a walk. After beginning the spring with one hit in his first eight at-bats, Cronenworth is 7-for-11 with two walks. … Miguel Andujar was 1-for-1 with a walk. He is batting .381/.519/.714 in 27 plate appearances this spring. … Nick Castellanos was 1-for-2 and is 5-for-8 during a three-game hitting streak. … Gavin Sheets went 0-for-3 and is batting .200 (3-for-15), but he did draw his team-high seventh walk of the spring. … Luis Campusano’s third hit in 18 at-bats this spring was a bloop single to center field. … Ty France, who can play three infield spots, was 1-for-4 and is batting .381 (8-for-21) in his attempt to make the roster (or someone’s roster) after signing a minor-league deal at the start of camp.

Balls and strikes: Two pitchers vying for what is likely one remaining job in the rotation pitched well. Germán Márquez, who signed a one-year, $1.75 million contract as spring training began, became the first Padres pitcher this spring to work three scoreless innings. The right-hander threw just 35 pitches, allowed two singles and struck out three batters in his second Cactus League start. Left-hander Marco Gonzales, a veteran coming back from flexor tendon surgery and in camp on a minor-league deal, followed with another three scoreless innings. Gonzales worked around the lead-off batter reaching on an error in his first inning, a lead-off walk in his second inning and three hits in his final inning. … Adrian Morejón struck out three of the four batters he faced in the seventh inning. … Jeremiah Estrada issued a two-out walk before getting his second strikeout to end a scoreless eighth. Estrada has faced 18 batters this spring. He has walked five and struck out six while allowing one hit. … David Morgan worked his third scoreless inning of the spring.

Extra bases: Cronenworth, playing shortstop for the second time in a Cactus League game, went to the ground to field a 104 mph grounder by Ben Cowles and make the throw to first base for the out. … Andujar, who has also started at first base and in left field, committed his first error of the spring in his second start at third base.

On deck: Right-hander Michael King will make his third start of the spring, 12:05 p.m. PT Saturday against the Cubs in Goodyear, Ariz.
