A pedestrian died Friday after they were struck by a freight train in southeast Sacramento County, stopping traffic at railroad crossings in the area as authorities investigated.
The incident was reported about 3:15 p.m. Friday near the 8500 block of Tiogawoods Drive, just south of Gerber Road in Sacramento’s Vineyard neighborhood, California Highway Patrol online dispatch records show.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and found an adult pedestrian who was pronounced dead at the scene, said Capt. Mark Nunez, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release further details about the pedestrian including their name and age after their family has been notified.
CHP and Union Pacific Railroad officials were investigating the pedestrian fatality, Nunez said.
Railroad tracks in the area were closed as authorities investigated at the scene. In a social media post about 4:40 p.m. Friday, the CHP South Sacramento office reported that traffic was affected at the nearby intersections of Gerber and French roads; Gerber and Reese roads; and Florin and Frasinetti roads.
