COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The No. 22 Texas A&M baseball team secured its final nonconference series win with a couple of victories over Oakland, 6-3 and 10-2 on Friday at Olsen Field.
It was a homecoming for Oakland head baseball coach Brian Nelson, who used to be the Brazos Valley Bombers head coach and is a graduate of Texas A&M. The other Aggieland connection is Oakland pitcher Taggert Dillard, the son of another former Bombers coach and former Bryan High baseball coach James Dillard. Taggert threw the final inning of game two, surrendering 1 hit and 1 run.
Why did the Aggies win? Stellar starting pitching helped lead the Aggies (13-1) to two victories on Friday over the Golden Grizzlies (1-13). Shane Sdao had a rough second inning in game one, giving up four hits, including a home run, giving up a walk and 3 runs. But he stayed in the game and pitched 7.0 innings, finishing with a career-high 8 strikeouts.
Weston Moss got the start in game two, picking up his second win of the season. He pitched 6.0 innings with 4 strikeouts, didn’t give up a single walk and surrendered 1 run on 3 hits.
Who stood out? Gavin Grahovac showed why he’s the former SEC Freshman of the Year. He went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI in game one. His 2 RBI double in the fifth inning gave the Aggies the lead after trailing 3-0 early in the game. He followed that up with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate in game two with 3 RBI and 2 runs, including a home run in the second inning that gave the Aggies a 6-0 lead.
Freshman Boston Kellner continued his hot start to his collegiate career. He was 1-for-2 at the plate in game one and also drew a walk and was hit by pitch for the third time this season. In game two, he was 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs, including a home run in the second inning.
Caden Sorrell also homered on the day. His 100th career hit was a 3 RBI, 439-foot bomb to tie the game 3-3 in the third inning.
What’s next? The Aggies wrap up the series and go for the sweep over Oakland Saturday at 11 a.m. After a midweek game against SFA on Tuesday, the Aggies begin SEC play next weekend at Oklahoma.
