John Carpino will retire as president of the Los Angeles Angels, a role he has held since 2009, the start of a tumultuous period for the franchise. The club announced on Friday that he will be replaced by Molly Jolly, a longtime executive with the team who most recently served as a senior vice president.
In a statement, owner Arte Moreno called Carpino a “cornerstone” while praising Jolly as “the perfect leader in our next chapter of Angels baseball.”
That next chapter follows a difficult period, during which Moreno has faced increased scrutiny. The Angels have had little success in recent years, with just one playoff appearance in the last 16 seasons, a 3-0 sweep in the ALDS back in 2014. Those lackluster results have come despite employing both Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, two of the best players of their generation. Now, Ohtani is a Los Angeles Dodgers superstar and a two-time World Series champion.
Over the last several seasons, the Angels have faced myriad complaints, ranging from their limited Spanish-language broadcasts to their lack of spending on infrastructure and treatment of minor-league players. The franchise is also emerging from a wrongful death civil trial in the wake of former pitcher Tyler Skaggs’ fatal drug overdose. Former media relations employee Eric Kay received a 22-year prison sentence for his role in the death.
On a more optimistic note for fans, Trout has spoken positively during spring training about his recovery from a series of nagging knee injuries. He told MLB.com on Sunday that he hopes to boost his baserunning speed to 30 feet per second (fps) after shedding about five pounds during the offseason. The last time his average sprint speed reached that level was in 2023, when he averaged 29.5 fps, according to Statcast. He showed off his renewed quickness by reaching a top speed of 29.9 fps during Sunday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Trout is also making a return to center field, where he has said he feels most comfortable.
