The man who allegedly shot a healthcare worker at a clinic Thursday in Fresno was a patient who had been there for a scheduled appointment, police said in an update.
The suspect, who was arrested at the scene without further incident, was identified as 69-year-old Bounlab Thammavong.
The victim, a woman in her 30s, was shot multiple times in the upper body. She was taken to a hospital and was in critical but stable condition.
While the shooting sent dozens of workers and patients scrambling, no one else was injured.
Officers responded at 8:21 a.m. to Family HealthCare Network at 1344 W. Clinton Ave. and took Thammavong into custody within minutes.
Officers then found the victim near the back of the facility.
Detectives believe the shooting occurred when the employee contacted Thammavong, who had been a patient at the clinic for about a year, inside an exam room. That is where he allegedly fired multiple rounds at the victim before dropping the weapon inside the building.
Police said the gun was received at the scene.
Thammavoing told detectives he shot the woman, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of multiple felony charges, including attempted murder.
The investigation is ongoing.
