GOODYEAR, Ariz. — The Cleveland Guardians beat the Padres 7-1 on Saturday at Goodyear Ballpark.
Batter’s box: Catcher Freddy Fermin was 2-for-3 and has five hits in his past six at-bats. … Infielder Jose Miranda, whose nine hits are tied for most on the team this spring, was 0-for-2 with a walk. … Infielder Ty France moved into a tie with Miranda by lacing a double in the last of his three at-bats. … Outfielder Bryce Johnson drove in the Padres’ only run with what would have been a double to the gap in left field in the third inning, though he officially was credited with a single after being called out at second. A replay seemed to clearly show he beat the tag. Johnson, who is fighting with Miranda, France and others for the final bench spot, later singled and was thrown out trying to steal second base. … An infield single gave catcher Ethan Salas his first hit of the spring. The Padres’ top position prospect began the spring 0-for-8.
Balls and strikes: The Guardians began the top of the first inning against Michael King with a triple, sacrifice fly and single before King worked through 3⅔ innings on 73 pitches. The only runner to reach base against King in the second and third did so on an error. King got the first two outs in the fourth before his day ended following a walk by Kyle Manzardo, a first-pitch home run by Rhys Hoskins and a walk to Bryan Rocchio. (Hoskins had struck out on the 13th pitch of his previous at-bat.) King, who threw just 32 strikes among his 57 (56%) pitches in his previous start, threw 47 strikes (64%) Saturday. … Garrett Hawkins, the Padres’ minor league pitcher of the year in 2025, replaced King and allowed a single to former Padres catcher Austin Hedges before finishing the fourth inning. Hawkins departed with one out in the fifth, having allowed a single and walked a batter. Both of the runners Hawkins left scored after he departed. In his previous four Cactus League appearances (3⅔ innings), the 26-year-old Hawkins had allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out six. … Bradgley Rodriguez, who made his MLB debut last season and was on the Padres’ postseason roster, continued his push to be part of the opening-day bullpen. The hard-throwing Rodriguez, who turns 23 in May, allowed his second hit of the spring while throwing his fifth scoreless inning.
Extra bases: Fermin improved to 6-for-6 on ABS challenges before losing his first challenge of the spring and then winning another one. The latter one took away a walk, and Ramírez grounded out on the next pitch. … Miranda, making his third start at third base, began an inning-ending double play in the first inning. Miranda, in camp on a minor-league deal, also plays first base. … Shortstop Mason McCoy, who is on the 40-man roster and trying to make the 26-man roster as an extra infielder and pinch-running option, sailed a throw to first base to prolong an inning for King. … The loss stopped a winning streak at three games and dropped the Padres below .500 (7-8) in Cactus League play.
On deck: Right-hander Logan Gillaspie will start Sunday, 12:10 p.m. against the Reds in Peoria. Gillaspie has a shot to be pitching out of the bullpen at the start of the year. He takes the place of Nick Pivetta, who is being given extra rest between starts due to arm fatigue.
