Seven people were shot, two fatally, in downtown Oakland early Saturday, and police detained multiple people.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting on the 400 block of 14th Street just after 3:30 a.m. and found the seven victims, according to the Oakland Police Department. Officers provided medical aid until paramedics arrived.

A 33-year-old woman was declared dead, while a 25-year-old man was hospitalized and died around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The other victims were listed in stable condition.

Officers detained people at the scene and recovered several firearms, police said.

The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

“Our officers responded quickly to the scene and will work tirelessly to investigate what happened and bring those responsible to justice,” Huy Nguyen, president of the Oakland Police Officers Association, said in a statement. “Incidents like this are a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence and the urgent need for more police officers for our entire community.”
