Anders Dreyer scored a first-half goal and San Diego FC remained undefeated in the 2026 season with a 1-0 win over Sporting Kansas City on Saturday in Kansas City, Kan.
SDFC’s scoring star, Dreyer received a clever pass from Onni Valakari in the 39th minute and put it in the top-left corner of the goal to provide the only score SDFC needed. The azul and chrome improved to 3-0 after beating CF Montreal and St. Louis City SC.
Saturday’s match continued SDFC’s historic success on the road. The club set a Major League Soccer record with 12 true road wins a year ago, and is now 1-0 in 2026.
SDFC outshot Sporting Kansas City 15-6 and controlled possession for 61.7% of the time.
Lewis Morgan made his SDFC debut late in the second half. The Scottish national missed most of the 2025 season with the New York Red Bulls because of knee and quad injuries. SDFC acquired the forward in December for $450,000, though that number will jump by another $200,000 if Morgan meets certain performance thresholds.
Goalkeeper Duran Ferrree made his third consecutive start in goal for SDFC and made three saves. The San Diego native was mostly unbothered until he made one of the great saves of his young career. SDFC led 1-0 in the 88th minute when Taylor Calheira beat the SDFC defense and poked a shot at SDFC’s goal. Ferree dove and Calheira’s shot away with his left hand.
Ferree made another lunging stop with his right hand in injury time, stopping Stephen Afrifra’s shot and preserving the win. Sporting Kansas City falls to 0-2-1.
Ferree, a former member of now-defunct San Diego Loyal SC, has yet to allow a goal this season.
Coach Mikey Varas has continued to play the 19-year-old, even though he sits third on the depth chart behind both CJ dos Santos and Pablo Sisniega. Dos Santos is continuing to recover from facial surgery, while Sisniega was forced to miss SDFC’s opener because of a red card he was assessed in last season’s playoff finale.
SDFC has a busy week ahead. The club will take on Toluca of Liga MX in the next stage of the Concacaf Champions Cup on Wednesday before traveling to FC Dallas on Saturday.
