VISTA — It was a memorable season for the Vista High School girls basketball team.

On Saturday, the second-seeded Panthers competed in the CIF State girls basketball Division 5 regional semifinal playoff game against No. 6 Schurr, who made the 75-mile trip from Montebello.

Despite winning two home games in the state playoffs, the Panthers were unable to continue their run, losing 43-35.

“I feel like we didn’t really come ready to play,” Vista coach Daeyanna Hale said. “We were still trying to recover from the little mistakes that we were doing. Shots weren’t falling tonight, so that obviously is a key factor, but we just couldn’t shake that bump.”

The Panthers (20-14) cut the lead down two to open the fourth quarter on the 3-pointer by senior Aaliyah Villegas.

Schurr (19-14) then scored eight consecutive points to increase the lead back to eight.

Leading the way for Vista was senior Isabella Mosley, who scored 17 points.

“We needed her to try to get in and score baskets,” said Hale, who wrapped up her first season at the helm for the Panthers. “I know she’s obviously taking threes as well. But today wasn’t that type of game. We had to work the mid-range and try to get some layups.”

The visiting Spartans showed a 1-3-1 zone defense for most of the game. Hale said Schurr was able to defend at a high level and not leave a pocket open.

“Definitely wasn’t something that we haven’t seen before,” she said. “They guarded our high post area. They definitely impacted the middle a lot and forced us to shoot. Unfortunately, tonight, we just couldn’t get a shot.”

Despite trailing by six in the second quarter, the Panthers were able to respond with a 9-0 run, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Isabella Mosley to take an 18-15 lead with 1:17 left before halftime.

Vista, which was the No. 6 seed in the CIF San Diego Section Division 3 playoffs, made its way to the finals before falling to top-seeded Escondido. The Panthers then took down No. 15 Desert Hot Springs and No. 10 Orange in their run in the state playoffs.

“We definitely fought hard,” Hale said. “This was a surprise to me too, as my first year as head coach.

“We knew we had the potential, but we didn’t know how far we could go when we’re all on when we’re all as one. We played very well together throughout the playoffs and even now through the state playoffs as well.”
