A man suffered serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle while fleeing police officers in Hollywood on Saturday, authorities said.

Around 8:30 p.m., officers responded to a call on the 5000 block of  Harold Way reporting an “assault with a deadly weapon” suspect at the location, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). As officers from the Hollywood Division arrived, the suspect ran from the scene.

The man then entered the southbound lanes of the 101 Freeway near Hollywood Boulevard, where he was struck by a vehicle. He was then taken to a nearby hospital in unknown condition.

The California Highway Patrol assisted with a Sig-Alert and closed the freeway until about 9:45 p.m., when all lanes reopened, according to CHP Los Angeles media.

Sgt. Lee, watch commander for the LAPD West Traffic Division, said the suspect sustained major injuries but that they were not fatal.

LAPD is handling the investigation.
