Re “What Marco Rubio gets wrong about the Beatles” (March 2): Secretary of State Rubio gave an impassioned speech in Munich recently, referencing culture, history, Christian faith and heritage. Andrew Fiala, professor of philosophy, takes issue with most of Rubio’s speech, in which Rubio states that not controlling borders will lead to “civilizational erasure,” and that more emphasis needs to be focused on language and the sacrifices made by our forefathers. Fiala then quotes ancient monks along with lyrics from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to criticize Rubio, labeling him “obtuse” and “ignorant,” with clear references to racism and xenophobia. Western civilization has created incredible innovation and achievements, while sadly slavery and colonialism will always be a part of history. Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, should be an inspiration to us all, just as his parents inspired him, as he often states — while living in the real world and not in a John Lennon utopia.
