PEORIA, Ariz. — The Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds 14-3 on Sunday at Peoria Stadium.

Batter’s box: Gavin Sheets hit his first home run of the spring. He is 4-for-18 (with seven walks) this spring. … Jackson Merrill was 2-for-3 with his fourth double of the spring. He is batting .333 (8-for-24) with a 1.135 OPS. … Nick Castellanos walked twice in three plate appearances and has a .464 on-base percentage in 28 Cactus League plate appearances. … Jake Cronenworth is batting .364 (8-for-22) after going 1-for-3 with a triple. … The Padres scored nine runs in the eighth inning, the final three on Romeo Sanabria’s home run. Sanabria, a 23-year-old first baseman who spent last season in Double-A, has two homers and two doubles in 17 at-bats this spring. … Jose Miranda was 1-for-3 and has a team-high 10 hits in 27 at-bats (.370). A corner infielder who has played 298 MLB games, Miranda is in camp on a minor-league deal.

Balls and strikes: Logan Gillaspie threw four more shutout innings, bringing his total to 7⅔ innings without allowing a run in three Cactus League appearances. The 28-year-old right-hander walked his first two batters of the spring and allowed two hits. Eight of his 12 outs came on ground balls, and he struck out two. Gillaspie, who has pitched in 12 games for the Padres the past two seasons, could be pitching his way into a “bridge” role in the bullpen. … Left-hander Kyle Hart, who is trending toward starting the season in the bullpen, retired all eight batters he faced. He has allowed three hits over 8⅔ scoreless innings in five appearances this spring.

Extra bases: Ramón Laureano was scratched from Sunday’s lineup with what the Padres called “general body fatigue.” Laureano, the Padres’ regular left fielder, was scheduled to start in right field. … Nick Castellanos, a right fielder for the past eight seasons and now a first baseman for the first time, made a leaping catch on a line drive.

On deck: Right-hander Randy Vásquez makes his third start of the spring, 1:10 p.m. against the Rangers in Peoria. Vásquez has allowed one hit, walked three and struck out five in 4⅔ scoreless innings this spring.
