The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has identified a swimmer who died at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park on Saturday afternoon.The video above is from prior coverage of the case.The swimmer was identified as 17-year-old DJ Neo Gallardo of Salinas.According to state park officials, a call was received around 1 p.m. about a male needing help in the water at a swimming hole near the Big Sur River Gorge.The male was recovered from the water shortly before 2 p.m. and pronounced dead following an “unknown incident that happened in the water,” according to officials.The official cause of death has not been released and is pending a medical examination.The Salinas Union High School District said the teen who died at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park was a student at Everett Alvarez High School.The district provided the following statement:“It is with profound sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that one of our students from Everett Alvarez High School passed away this weekend following an incident in the Big Sur area.“The loss of a young life deeply affects a school community. Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, and loved ones as they navigate this unimaginable grief. This loss will be especially felt across the Everett Alvarez High School community, and we know this news will be difficult for many throughout the Salinas Union High School District. We hold everyone who is grieving in our thoughts during this painful time.”The Salinas Union High School District has mobilized the Everett Alvarez High School Wellness Center team, counselors and additional wellness staff from other campuses to support students and staff.
