An unhoused man was found dead near the Ohlone Greenway in Northwest Berkeley Thursday.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office’s Coroner’s Bureau identified the man Monday as Lon Turner, 67, of El Cerrito.
A 911 caller reported an unresponsive person near the Ohlone Greenway at 2:42 p.m. Thursday, according to a Berkeley Fire Department spokesperson.
When firefighter-paramedics arrived, they found Turner with no pulse and blood on his face, according to BFD. They tried to resuscitate him to no avail, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Berkeley police are investigating Turner’s death. His cause and manner of death were not immediately available Monday.
The death was first reported by The Berkeley Scanner.
According to Alameda County Health Care for the Homeless, 332 unhoused people died in the county, 23 of them in Berkeley, during 2024, the most recent year for which data were available. It was the lowest number of deaths since before the COVID 19 pandemic began, but higher than in 2018 and 2019 when the figures were, respectively, 195 and 246.
