The San Francisco 49ers are no strangers to difficult offseason decisions. But this one cuts to the heart of the defense.

Multiple teams have reportedly reached out to the 49ers to gauge the availability of All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner, according to Easton Butler of Packers Report. The New York Giants are among the teams that have made contact.

Whether San Francisco has any genuine interest in moving Warner remains unclear. But the calls are reportedly happening, and that alone makes this a story worth watching.

The 49ers have been receiving calls about LB Fred Warner, with the Giants being one of the calls, per source.

What We Know About the Warner SituationFred Warner, San Francisco 49ers

A trade looks unlikely on the surface. Warner is the best player on San Francisco’s defense and has been for years. He is a three-time All-Pro, a team captain, and the kind of player franchises build around rather than move on from.

But the situation is not as straightforward as it might appear. Last week, Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com reported hearing that the 49ers might at least consider a trade under specific circumstances. Stapleton noted that San Francisco could potentially entertain the idea if it somehow led to getting Dre Greenlaw back in the fold.

That is a narrow and specific condition. But it suggests the conversation is happening at some level beyond pure speculation.

The more telling detail is the volume of calls itself. Multiple teams do not independently reach out about a player unless there is some signal, however faint, that a move could be possible. Whether that signal is coming from the 49ers’ front office, Warner’s camp, or simply opportunistic teams testing the market is the key question that remains unanswered.

I don’t know if San Francisco will trade Warner. Heard they might consider it if somehow they could get Dre Greenlaw back in the fold.

Warner’s Value and His 2025 Season

Warner missed significant time in 2025 after suffering a dislocated and fractured right ankle on October 12. He is expected to be fully healthy for the offseason program, but the injury cut short what was shaping up to be another dominant season.

In six games before going down, Warner recorded 51 tackles, three passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. At that pace he was tracking toward 140-plus tackles on the season — a number that would have ranked among the best in the league.

His value on the trade market would be enormous. A healthy, All-Pro inside linebacker in his prime does not become available often, which explains why teams are calling. For a franchise like the Giants, who are rebuilding and need defensive infrastructure, Warner would be a transformative addition.

What This Means for the 49ersJohn Lynch, San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco is navigating one of their most complex offseasons in recent memory. Jauan Jennings is expected to leave in free agency. Trent Williams‘ contract situation is unresolved. And the secondary ranked 25th in passing yards allowed in 2025.

Trading Warner would create cap relief and potentially generate significant draft capital. But it would also strip the defense of its most important piece at a moment when the unit already has questions to answer.

John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to roster decisions. But moving Warner would be a seismic call that would reshape the identity of this defense entirely.

Final Word for the 49ers

Where there is smoke, there is usually fire. Multiple teams calling about the same player does not happen in a vacuum.

Warner may have no interest in leaving. The 49ers may have no interest in moving him. And a trade still looks unlikely given how central Warner is to everything San Francisco does on defense. But the fact that this conversation is happening publicly means it is worth monitoring rather than dismissing outright.

Lynch has given no indication he wants to move his best defensive player. Until that changes, this remains a rumor rather than a reality.
