An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy was charged with voluntary manslaughter for fatally shooting her fiancée in their Tustin home last summer, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said.

Aimee Alexis Hidalgo, 28, of Tustin, shot her fiancée, 35-year-old Brittany Shaw, nine times when the victim returned to their studio apartment after walking their dog, the DA’s office said. The shooting was reported shortly after 5 a.m. on Aug. 8, 2025.

According to the DA’s office, Shaw was shot at “close intermediate range” in the head, in addition to being hit by gunfire on her upper body and right arm.

Hidalgo called 911 after the shooting and performed CPR on the victim. Ultimately, Shaw was hospitalized but died of her injuries.

Shaw worked at the Orange County Jail in Correctional Health and was planning a destination wedding in Mexico with Hidalgo, the DA’s office said.

Hidalgo was placed on administrative leave from the sheriff’s department after the shooting. She joined the department as a deputy in 2021. The DA’s office said she turned herself in on Monday after she was charged with voluntary manslaughter and an enhancement of personal use of a firearm.

If convicted, Hidalgo faces a maximum sentence of 21 years in prison.

A possible motive for the shooting was not revealed. It’s unclear if there’s an attorney available who can speak on Hidalgo’s behalf.
