LOS ANGELES, CA — Traffic will be impacted on the 5 Freeway and nearby roads beginning on Friday when construction will shut down parts of the interstate in the San Fernando Valley over the entire weekend.
The southbound freeway will be reduced to two lanes through the Burbank area all weekend beginning Friday, March 13. It will be fully shut down to traffic overnight in that area.
This closure is the fifth of six 55-hour weekend-long closures planned through spring 2026 as part of a paving project.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of the planned closure:
From 10 p.m. Friday, March 13 through 5 a.m. Monday, March 16:
Up to four lanes of the southbound 5 will be shut down between Cohasset Street and Empire Avenue/San Fernando Boulevard.The southbound 5 off-ramp at Empire Avenue will be closed. The southbound 5 on- and off-ramps at Buena Vista Street will be closed.
From 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday, March 14 and from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, March 16:
The southbound 5 between Hollywood Way and Empire Avenue/San Fernando Boulevard will be fully closed to all traffic.The southbound 5 on- and off-ramps at Buena Vista Street will be closed.The southbound 5 off-ramp at Empire Avenue will be closed.The southbound 5 on-ramp at Hollywood Way will be closed.
Caltrans recommended the following alternative routes:
Eastbound 134 Freeway: Take the southbound 170 Freeway to the eastbound 134. 118 Freeway: Motorists on the 118 will be directed to the southbound 405 Freeway to the southbound 101 Freeway.
The work is part of a rehabilitation project to replace damaged pavement on the 5 Freeway between Empire Avenue and Cohasset Street. The $23.2 million project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
Another project on the 405 Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass involves similar weekend-long closures. Caltrans expects to schedule two of those closures monthly through the middle of the year.
The next weekend-long 405 closure is planned for March 20-23.
