The annual event recognizes outstanding women from across Los Angeles County whose leadership and service strengthen their communities. Each member of the Board of Supervisors selects an honoree who exemplifies dedication, impact, and public leadership.
Lucy Jones, a visiting associate at California Institute of Technology, was recognized for her decades-long career advancing earthquake research and helping communities better prepare for natural disasters. She is widely regarded as one of the world’s most recognized earthquake scientists.
“For decades, Dr. Lucy Jones has been a trusted voice helping Californians understand and prepare for natural disasters,” Barger said. “Her ability to translate complex science into clear guidance has empowered millions of people to take preparedness seriously. Because of her leadership, our communities are stronger, safer, and better equipped to face the challenges ahead.”
Jones expressed appreciation for the recognition, noting that her work has focused on helping people understand natural hazards and take practical steps to protect themselves and their communities.
“I appreciate being recognized in this way,” Jones said. “My work has focused on helping people understand the risks we face and take practical steps to protect themselves and their communities. Being honored today reminds us all that preparedness is a shared responsibility and that together, we can make a real difference.”
Jones spent 33 years with the United States Geological Survey, where she helped shape national natural hazard research and public risk communication. She also helped develop the methodology used for earthquake advisories in California.
Over the course of her career, Jones has authored more than 100 scientific papers and wrote the book The Big Ones: How Natural Disasters Have Shaped Us (And What We Can Do About Them). She has also been a leading voice in public preparedness initiatives, including promoting the annual Great ShakeOut earthquake drill, which encourages millions of people worldwide to practice life-saving safety actions.
The Women of the Year recognition celebrates women whose leadership, compassion, and dedication reflect the strength and diversity of communities across Los Angeles County.
