Firefighters responded just after 1:20 p.m. to the area West Ashlan Avenue near Marks Avenue for reports of a car that had left the roadway and struck an apartment unit.

Officials said the reason the driver left the roadway is still unknown.

A dog that was inside the apartment during the crash was not hurt and was safely reunited with its owner, firefighters said.

Because of the structural damage to the building, Fresno Fire’s Urban Search and Rescue team was called to the scene to assess the stability of the structure. Crews installed shoring to help stabilize the building and prevent a possible collapse.

The crash also damaged gas lines, forcing crews to shut off utilities to the impacted apartment unit and a neighboring unit as a precaution.

As a result of the damage, three residents, including two children, were displaced from their home.

The Fresno Police and Fire Chaplaincy is assisting the family and working to help them secure resources following the incident.
