PEORIA, Ariz. — The Rangers beat the Padres 4-1 on Monday at Peoria Stadium.

Batter’s box: Luis Campusano hit his first double of the spring. After starting the spring with one hit in his first eight at-bats, Campusano is 3-for-16 over the past five games. … Jake Cronenworth singled, walked and stole a base. He is batting .375 (9-for-24). … Corner infielder Ty France, who is battling for a bench spot, went 1-for-3 with his fourth double. He is batting .370 (10-for-27). His 10 hits are tied for the team lead with Jose Miranda, also a corner infielder vying for a roster spot. … Gavin Sheets, who has made plate discipline a focus this spring, drew his team-leading eighth walk of the season. He is 4-for-20 but has a .429 on-base percentage this spring.

Balls and strikes: Randy Vásquez surrendered two runs in the second inning, the first scored against him this spring. The Rangers also created more traffic (on three hits and two walks in four innings) than either of the two MLB teams Vásquez had faced. Including his outing against Great Britain, he entered Monday having allowed two hits and walked three over 8⅔ innings. Vásquez is locked into a rotation spot, so the rest of his spring is about building up for the season. He threw 63 pitches on Monday. … Left-hander Luis Gutierrez, who pitched (25 games, 21 starts) at all four levels of the Padres’ minor-league system last season and had been highly impressive on the backfields in recent weeks, made his first appearance in a major league spring training game. The 22-year-old Gutierrez followed Vásquez to the mound and got two quick outs before walking a batter and surrendering an RBI double to Andrew McCutchen. A scoreless sixth inning followed despite France and Gutierrez committing errors. … David Morgan walked the first batter he faced but worked his fourth scoreless inning with help from a double play on a line drive. … Jeremiah Estrada walked a batter and struck out a batter. He has walked six and struck out seven in five scoreless innings. … Left-hander Adrian Morejón worked around a one-out single and a stolen base for his second consecutive scoreless inning.

Extra bases: Campusano became the first of the Padres’ two projected catchers to start behind the plate two days in a row. … The Padres were out of ABS challenges in the first inning after Campusano lost a challenge on a ball call and Cronenworth lost a challenge on a strike call. The Rangers were out of challenges by the fifth inning, as home plate umpire Austin Jones had all four of his challenged calls confirmed by the review system.

On deck: Right-hander Walker Buehler will make his second Cactus League start, 1:10 p.m. today against the Angels in Tempe, Ariz. Jackson Wolf, Bradgley Rodriguez and Garrett Hawkins are also scheduled to pitch. Buehler, who allowed two runs over three innings in his start on March 5, is competing with four others for what is likely one available rotation spot.
