Following the arrest last week of a suspect in a December shooting near Alamitos Beach, police found 30 firearms in his home, 12 of which they say did not have serial numbers.
James William Higgins, 74, was taken into custody on Friday on suspicion of firing a weapon at another driver in the area of Ocean Boulevard and Alamitos Avenue on Dec. 18, Long Beach police said.
A dispute preceded the shooting, police said. No one was hit, but a nearby residential building was struck by gunfire. It wasn’t known how many shots Higgins was accused of firing.
Detectives found the cache of weapons inside Higgins’ home, along with a “large quantity” of ammunition, police said.
Higgins was arrested on suspicion of discharging a firearm at an inhabited dwelling, assault with a firearm, manufacturing or assembling an unregistered firearm and manufacturing, or causing to be manufactured an assault weapon, police said. He was being held on $250,000 bail.
A firearm without a serial number is commonly referred to as a “ghost” gun because it is untraceable.
