FRESNO, Calif. — A Fresno 14-year-old high school student died Monday after collapsing during a physical education class, according to a spokesperson for Fresno Unified School District.

The Fresno High School student has been identified as Daniel Padilla Jr.

Fresno Unified officials say the incident happened when Padilla Jr. collapsed during a physical education class while playing basketball.

First responders were called to the campus and he was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Students on campus said they were stunned by the emergency and devastated to learn their classmate did not survive.

One student described seeing emergency crews arrive shortly after the medical call was made.

“I am going to think about it a lot ’cause it could happen to anyone else,” said Giovanni, a Fresno High junior.

In a statement, the district said, “Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, and school community during this incredibly difficult time.”

Neighbors also expressed shock at the news and said their hearts went out to the family grieving the loss of their child.

No additional information has been released by the district.
