BUENA PARK, Calif. (KABC) — Police in Buena Park are searching for a suspect who hit and killed a pedestrian before taking off and abandoning the car.

The hit-and-run crash happened around 1:50 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Beach and Artesia boulevards. Eyewitness News obtained surveillance video that captured the collision.

The video shows a man walking across the street at Artesia Boulevard, heading west, when a driver going south on Beach Boulevard, who had a green light, crashed into the man. The victim was sent flying down the road, and police said the driver fled the scene instead of stopping.

In the footage, drivers right behind the suspect vehicle are seen applying their brakes. Police say witnesses called 911 right away.

“We had a witness call in saying that a white sedan had struck a pedestrian and traveled southbound on Beach Boulevard. Our officers got there on scene pretty quickly,” said Lt. Jon Shaddow with the Buena Park Police Ddepartment.

The victim, who has not been identified, was rushed to UCI Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

Buena Park police launched an investigation and put out information about the suspect’s vehicle. A short time later, it was found abandoned about eight miles south of the crash scene in Garden Grove.

“We were able to locate the vehicle, which was a white Kia sedan, located at Valley View Street and Chapman Avenue in the city of Garden Grove, unoccupied,” Shaddow said.

As police continue to search for the suspect, they are emphasizing the importance of staying at the scene of a crash.

“It is required by law that you stop and you wait for the police,” Shaddow said.

If you witnessed the crash or have any information about the driver, you are urged to contact Buena Park police at (714) 562-3943.
