Bears Drop First Midweek Game 3-2
SAN JOSE— The California baseball team saw its 11-game win streak ended by San Jose State on Tuesday falling to the host Spartans 3-2 at Excite Ballpark in San Jose.
The Spartans took the lead in their first at bat of the night hitting a lead-off solo home run. Cal’s offense threatened early but could not break through getting runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings but coming up empty with six left on base.
The Bears broke through in the top of the fourth inning when nine-hole hitter Lawson Olmstead doubled off the centerfield wall on an 0-2 count and was brought in on an RBI single by Hideki Prather. Prather walked twice before that and extended his hit streak to 15 games with the single. He would end the game 2-for-3 in his eighth multi-hit game of the season. Olmstead joined him in a multi-hit effort going 2-for-3 with a walk.
Cal’s first lead of the night came in the top of the seventh with Carl Schmidt collecting a one-out double to left field and advancing to third on a wild pitch before Jett Kenady brought him home on a sac-fly. That lead did not hold long with SJSU tying the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth scoring its first run since its first at-bat of the game.
In the bottom of the ninth the Spartans walked it off on a bases-loaded bloop single.
Cal won the hit battle 10-6 but left 13 runners on base.
Freshman Trent Roach had another solid midweek start as he hung three straight zeros after allowing the lead-off home run. The right hander tossed four full innings and gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out four. Fellow rookie Jett Wright followed him out of the pen and tossed 1.2 scoreless inning and allowed just a hit and a walk while striking out a pair.
Cal now returns home to open ACC play with a weekend series against No. 15 North Carolina. Friday’s first pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. on ACCNX.
