Sacramento police shot a man who they say advanced toward officers with a knife after a reported disturbance at a school campus.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man was shot by a Sacramento police officer Tuesday evening after officers say he advanced toward them with a knife at a school campus in north Sacramento.

According to the Sacramento Police Department, officers responded just before 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday to the 3100 block of Northstead Drive after receiving a report of a disturbance involving a weapon.

The caller told dispatch that a man armed with a knife was chasing another adult man at a school campus.

When officers arrived, they located the suspect in front of the school while he was still armed with a knife, police said.

Officers gave the suspect multiple commands to drop the knife, according to police. Authorities say the man refused and continued to advance toward officers.

An officer-involved shooting then occurred. Police say one officer fired their firearm, hitting the suspect at least once. A less-lethal device was also deployed during the encounter.

Officers provided emergency medical aid to the suspect at the scene. The Sacramento Fire Department took him to a nearby hospital, where police say he is in stable condition.

The suspect is expected to be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail once he is medically cleared from the hospital.

Police say officers recovered the knife at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident.

The Sacramento Police Department’s Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Division and Professional Standards Unit are investigating the shooting.

The department’s Force Investigation Team will also conduct a review focused on policy, tactics and training related to the use of force.

The Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office are monitoring the investigation, according to police.

Under Sacramento’s police use-of-force policy and California Senate Bill 1421, authorities say all relevant video and audio from the incident will be released publicly within 30 days.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact the Sacramento Police Department dispatch center at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
