Studio Ghibli is known for its whimsical films, often becoming beloved movies that have endured for decades. One of Hayao Miyazaki’s most popular films is Kiki’s Delivery Service, which debuted in 1989 and quickly became a classic.
Now, the film has been remastered in 4K and will play on IMAX in selected theaters. The limited-time release will start on March 12, and San Francisco is one of the lucky cities to show the screening. You can see the film in IMAX at the AMC Metreon 16 starting on Thursday, March 12, through Wednesday, March 18. There are limited showtimes, so we recommend getting your tickets as soon as you can.
IMAX screens are wider and provide richer colors and higher image resolution, resulting in a more immersive experience for viewers. The remastering is the work of GKIDS, partnered with IMAX, which is remastering classic Studio Ghibli films into 4k for North American Audiences. Kiki’s Delivery Service is the latest film in the project, with more remastered titles expected.

The animated film follows Kiki, a young witch who follows a tradition of leaving home to develop her craft. Kiki decides to settle in a scenic seaside town with her cat Jiji. The delightful coming-of-age film has been a family favorite for over 30 years, and it stars Kirsten Dunst, Janeane Garofalo, Phil Hartman, and Debbie Reynolds.
The film is the work of Studio Ghibli and legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki is an academy award winning filmmaker, noted for his fantastical stories and beautiful animation style. Other notable movies include Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and most recently, The Boy and the Heron, which features voice acting by Robert Patterson, Christian Bale, and Florence Pugh.
