An ordinance restricting the sale and distribution of nitrous oxide was approved by the Garden Grove City Council on Tuesday night.

The vote on the second and final vote and adoption was 7-0.

This new law takes effect 30 days after adoption. It will restrict the use and possession of nitrous oxide to professional uses such as a mild sedative for medical and dental uses, certain foods (such as whipped cream) and some auto racing purposes.

Aside from those uses, nitrous oxide – also known as “nox” – can be a highly addictive intoxicant, often favored by young persons.

Several other Orange County cities – including Huntington Beach, Stanton and Westminster have adopted, or are considering adoption, of similar laws.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, a presentation was made about the Garden Grove Tourism Improvement District, funded by the the city’s 10 hotels. With the demise of Anaheim’s transit shuttle bus system, Garden Grove’s TID will spend $600,000 for a city-branded bus system (see illustration).

The Garden Grove Police Department made a report on e-bake safety and enforcement.
