ISLAND PARK, NY. — A 36-year-old Long Beach resident was arrested and charged with DWI and assault Wednesday after a traffic stop turned violent when officers observed that the woman was intoxicated, police said.
Nassau County police reported that 36-year-old Alisha Thomas was seen driving a 2026 Infiniti along Long Beach Road in Island Park and failing to stay in her lane just after 3:30 Wednesday, at which point the officers who saw her made the traffic stop.
During the stop, police say the officers observed that Thomas was intoxicated and attempted to place her under arrest. When the officers tried to arrest her, however, Thomas became violent and combative, police said. Both Thomas and two police officers were hospitalized for evaluation and treatment after the arrest confrontation, police said, with both of the officers having sustained injuries.
Thomas’s arraignment is scheduled for Thursday, police say. She’s charged with DWI, two second-degree counts of assault, one second-degree count of harassment, a second-degree count of obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and multiple traffic violations, police said.
