San Francisco is set to lose another major grocery store.
Lucky’s parent company, The Save Mart Companies, said it will close its store at 1750 Fulton St., near the University of San Francisco, on Sept. 11, adding to a growing list of supermarket closures in the city.
A notice sent to state officials this week said the closure is expected to be permanent and would affect 48 workers. In a statement to the Chronicle, Phil Keene, Save Mart’s senior director of communications and government affairs, said the company decided to shut the store after continued financial struggles.
“We routinely assess the performance of all of our stores to ensure they meet business standards,” Keene said. “Through the normal course of business, we sometimes have to make the tough decision to close an underperforming location.”
Keene said the Fulton Street store would close “based on economic factors.”
“Closing a store is not a decision we take lightly, but this store has had performance issues for an extended period of time,” he said. “We have worked to enhance and remodel the location, but it has not shown the sales and profit needed to continue operations. In fact, despite the best efforts of a great team, we have lost money year over year at this location.”
The filing says all employees at the store would be affected. Some workers may be eligible to transfer to nearby stores, depending on availability and seniority, according to Save Mart. Employees would also have the right to bump more junior workers under the applicable collective bargaining agreement, the notice says.
The affected positions include 31 multipurpose clerks, as well as managers, service specialists, head clerks and a meat cutter.
The planned closure follows other recent grocery disruptions in San Francisco. Last year, Lucky closed its Bayview store, which had been the neighborhood’s only major supermarket. Safeway has also closed its Fillmore district store in 2025, spurring city officials to push for an easier path to bring in a replacement grocer.
Keene said Save Mart would continue serving customers at its Lucky store at 1515 Sloat Blvd. in San Francisco and at 6843 Mission St. in Daly City.
“We remain committed to the San Francisco area,” he said.
