Launching next week, the Nighttime show wants to focus on not just the latest Calfornia news, but to cover issues that affect the world.

Elex Michaelson is launching a Los Angeles-based nighttime News Show with CNN

CNN is launching a new California-based late-night news network show, “The Story Is,” with host Elex Michaelson. Premiering on Monday, Oct. 27 at 9 p.m. PT on CNN and CNN International.

Michaelson is an award-winning journalist who is best known for his work on “The Issue Is With Elex Michaelson,” which aired on the Fox affiliate network KTTV. There, he built himself a reputation as a leading voice in public affairs and politics. Hosting prominent guests such as Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Donald Trump, among many others.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is set to join Michaelson for the first episode just in time to discuss the upcoming Nov. 4 vote on redistricting the state. Other guests for the launch week will include former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA), and Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff.

“The Story Is will waste no time in bringing together key figures from across the political spectrum to have fair, respectful and inclusive conversations on the issues that are important to our viewers all over the world,” said Michaelson. “By going beyond the predictable talking points, The Story Is will become a surefire source for news that breaks through, often with hope, joy and humor. I’m thrilled to bring this show to the world from LA!”

Currently, the main competition in that time slot comes from major cable network rivals running reruns of their major news shows. Like MSNBC’s “The Briefing with Jen Psaki” and “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.”

In an interview with Deadline, Michaelson said viewers are “watching dated news in a media environment that is faster and faster. I don’t think that works anymore.”

Michaelson is also aiming for more of a late-night news show feel rather than the usual day time newscast you might find. Highlighting California issues, but also seeing how those that affect California tend to also impact the rest of the world.

“I don’t think this is going to be West Coast news tonight or a version of local news,” Michaelson said. “But I do think that a lot of issues that are big in California are worldwide issues, like immigration, trade, and tariffs.”
