SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Diego, the California sea lion at Utah’s Hogle Zoo, has passed away after a struggle with degenerative disc disease.

The zoo announced that Diego, who first arrived there in 2017, passed away on Oct. 22.

The team caring for Diego noticed a sudden decrease in his appetite and a change in his behavior on Oct. 20 — indicating significant discomfort, according to Hogle Zoo.

Diego battled a spinal condition that affected his mobility and limited the movement of his rear flippers after being diagnosed in 2024 with degenerative disc disease.

Veterinary teams worked closely with Diego following his diagnosis to provide ongoing care, Hogle Zoo said. He received laser therapy, medications, training adjustments and habitat evaluations — all aimed at maintaining his mobility and comfort.

Despite all the care and attention he received, the veterinary team ultimately made the decision to euthanize Diego.

“He was surrounded by his keepers and hospital staff who cared for him, ensuring he received the best possible care throughout his life,” Hogle Zoo said.

The zoo said Diego was known for his loud vocalizations, curious personality and his close connection with his care team.

His care team described Diego as a “special sea lion full of personality.”

“He loved sardines and playing in the water. He was eager to learn new things and participate in fun, challenging games during training sessions, creating unique bonds with his trusted care team,” according to Hogle Zoo.

The zoo said California sea lions are found along the West Coast of North America.

They have streamlined bodies, powerful front flippers that propel them through the water and rear flippers that can rotate to act like a rudder.
