CORONADO, Calif. — The historic Hotel Del Coronado has earned a spot in TIME Magazine’s 2026 World’s Greatest Places.

The recognition comes after the beachfront resort completed a seven-year property-wide restoration, costing over $550 million. It is considered to be one of the most significant renovations in Hotel Del Coronado’s 138-year history.

“Being recognized by TIME is a testament to the passion poured into the restoration of this American treasure,” Marco Tabet, General Manager of Hotel del Coronado, said. “We’ve spent the last seven years ensuring that the magic of The Del’s past isn’t just preserved, but elevated for the next generation of world travelers.”

Built in 1888, Hotel del Coronado has long been considered one of California’s most iconic coastal resorts. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, a distinction shared with other landmarks, including the White House and the Statue of Liberty. The Del is also among just 23 historic hotels in the United States with that designation.

To compile the list, TIME Magazine recognizes and curates a list of the top 100 destinations globally, from hotels to parks and attractions, by soliciting nominations from editors, industry experts and an application process. It evaluates each nomination with an eye toward those offering new and exciting experiences. Hotel del Coronado was recognized in the “Places to Stay” category.

In the editorial, TIME Magazine noted Hotel Del Coronado’s years-long restoration, preserving its historic Belle Époque architecture while updating the property. The magazine also highlighted the resort’s revitalization of the Victorian Neighborhood, which includes the landmark Victorian building, guestrooms, garden courtyard and the iconic Crown Room.

“New additions feel thoughtfully integrated: Nobu Del Coronado and Serẽa, a sea-to-table fine dining restaurant, bring contemporary energy without eclipsing the hotel’s historic soul,” TIME Magazine said. “The unveiling of the Shore House and Beach Village nabes—75 one- to three-bedroom flats and a gated cottage collection, respectively—add a residential dimension that further solidifies the Del’s standing as a global resort icon.”
