BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — Two men tied to a 2023 shootout during an attempted burglary on Pine Street have been sentenced to state prison, according to the Kern County Superior Court.

On March 11, 2026, Melvin Carter of Palmdale was sentenced to 22 years and eight months in prison. Frederick Minnoy III of Bakersfield was sentenced to eight years.

The case stems from Feb. 23, 2023, when Bakersfield police officers were called to the 2300 block of Pine Street, just after 7 p.m., for a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot injury.

Police said the man arrived home and saw an unknown vehicle parked in his driveway and several unknown men running out of his home toward the vehicle. One of the men had a gun and began firing at the victim while he was inside his car, police said.

The victim, who police said was a licensed concealed carry permit holder, returned fire. During the exchange, the victim suffered a non-life-threatening injury, police said.

The suspects drove away in the vehicle, and Bakersfield police detectives later took over the investigation.
