The SRJC softball team huddles together ahead of their game against Butte College on Feb. 3, 2026.

The Santa Rosa Junior College softball team captured both games of a nonconference doubleheader against San Jose City College at Marv Mayes Field Feb. 25, winning 9-1 and 8-5.

In Game 1, San Jose struck first to take a 1-0 lead, but Santa Rosa immediately responded with a five-run bottom of the first inning.

Center fielder Kylee Bauman doubled to left field and later scored the tying run on a wild pitch. The Bear Cubs continued to apply pressure, adding four more runs in the frame to seize control early.

After a scoreless second and third inning, the Bear Cubs added runs from the fourth inning on and prevented the Jaguars from gaining momentum. Santa Rosa closed out a 9-1 victory in six innings.

Outfielder Mia Avila credited the team’s atmosphere for the strong performance.

“Our vibes were good, our energy was up, and it was just what we needed today,” Avila said.

The second game proved more competitive. Santa Rosa scored twice in the opening inning to take an early lead, but San Jose answered with three runs in the third to move ahead 3-2.

Second baseman Emma Bushby said the team remained composed after briefly falling behind.

“After they got the lead 3-2, the coach brought us in and said, ‘Let’s go get some more,’ so we obviously listened to her,” Bushby said.

The Bear Cubs responded. Shortstop Kaihla Javinen delivered a two-run double as part of a three-run inning.

Santa Rosa extended its advantage to 8-3 in the fourth inning with three additional runs. San Jose narrowed the gap with two runs in the fifth, but the Bear Cubs held on to secure an 8-5 win.

Head coach Madison Green praised the team’s focus throughout the day.

“We were locked in. San Jose usually has a really good program, so I think we came ready to play, and our energy was up the whole day,” Green said.

While the opener was more straightforward, she said the second game required deeper rotation and adjustments.

“We had to use almost the whole team, which is what we love to do, because our team is really deep. We have really good players, and we are always trying to find ways to work people in and be successful,” Green said.

Santa Rosa fell 6-0 on the road at Folsom Lake College on Feb. 26 in Big 8 Conference play.

The Bear Cubs returned home Feb. 28 and split a doubleheader against Sierra College. Santa Rosa secured a 7-0 shutout in the first game before dropping the second 8-3.

Santa Rosa continued conference play March 3 with a 7-0 win over Modesto Junior College at Marv Mayes Field.

The Bear Cubs split another conference doubleheader at American River College, March 7, winning the opener, 11-7, before falling 8-0 in five innings during the second game.

Santa Rosa finished its nonconference schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Ohlone College on March 11 at Marv Mayes Field, winning the first game 22-4 and final game 8-0 in five innings.

The Bear Cubs return to Big 8 Conference play, hosting Diablo Valley College March 14 for a doubleheader scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. at Marv Mayes Field.
