First-ever CIF State Championship soccer weekend kicks off in Sacramento
THE KICKOFF OF THE INAUGURAL CIF STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND. I’M GOING TO SHOW YOU SOMETHING YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE IN THIS FLAG RIGHT HERE. THE CORNER FLAG IN SOCCER. WELL, IT SAYS IT ALL. THE CIF SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS AND TAKE A LOOK BECAUSE THIS IS THE FIRST HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SOCCER MATCH EVER TO BE PLAYED IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. THIS KICKING OFF A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND IN CALIFORNIA, ALL BEING HOSTED RIGHT HERE AT NATOMAS HIGH SCHOOL. GAME ONE, DIVISION FIVE GIRLS VERSUS COASTAL ACADEMY. AND THEN WE GOT GAMES ALL DAY FRIDAY AND THEN ALL DAY SATURDAY, CULMINATING WITH AN 8 P.M. UNDER THE LIGHTS. DIVISION ONE BOYS MATCHUP. THE CIF TALKING ABOUT THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HAVING A FIRST EVER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER IN CALIFORNIA. LET’S LET’S NOT FORGET THAT THERE’S 1624 MEMBER SCHOOLS. THERE’S OVER 1100 THAT PLAY SOCCER. SO NOW YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT THERE ARE 20 TEAMS STILL ALIVE. I MEAN, THAT IS QUITE AN ACCOMPLISHMENT. SO FOR THE ABILITY TO HAVE AND PLAY FOR A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND WHETHER YOU WIN OR LOSE, THE FACT THAT YOU GOT TO PLAY IN THE FIRST ONE IS PRETTY, PRETTY SPECIAL. AND AGAIN, EVEN THE CORNER FLAGS FOR THESE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES SAY IT RIGHT THERE, C I F SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP. FIRST TIME EVER IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS. With hype music blaring from the Natomas High School stadium speakers, the girls teams for Lowell and Coastal Academy clapped, cheered and performed their own pre-game cheer as the referee’s whistle blew for the kickoff game of the first-ever high school state final soccer match.The Division V girls matchup began two full days of the first-ever state finals weekend, pitting north versus south in Sacramento.”It’s been a long time coming,” said Chris Fahey of the California Interscholastic Federation. Natomas High School hosted 20 teams vying for 10 state titles across five divisions in the CIF’s inaugural State Championship Weekend.The first game kicked off Friday at 10 a.m. and culminates with the boys Division 1 final on Saturday night under the lights.
