LONG BEACH – Long Beach Wilson’s baseball team used overpowering pitching and clutch hitting to defeat Cabrillo 5-1 in a Moore League opener Friday.
The Bruins (7-3, 1-0) were led by James Mirabile, who went 1 for 1 at the plate but was on base three times (safe on error and hit-by-pitch). He got Wilson on the scoreboard in the first inning with an RBI single. He also scored a run during a three-run sixth inning that essentially secured the win for Wilson.
Mirabile also pitched. He went two scoreless innings, had five strikeouts, allowed one hit and two walks.
He talked about Wilson’s approach at the plate against Jaguars starter Fabian Vigil, who is a freshman.

“In the pregame hitters meeting, we really talked about, ‘you have to see the ball deep,’” said Mirabile. “The freshman on the mound for them, he did a great job. You have to see the ball deep and then stay through it as long as possible. …I think as soon as we were able to get the mental cue to let the ball travel and stay right-center with it, we were able to break through.”
The sixth inning was critical for Wilson and for Mirabile in particular.
With the Bruins clinging to a 2-1 lead, Mirabile allowed the tying run to reach base with an infield single by leadoff hitter Bendito Diaz. He then had a wild pitch that moved Diaz to second base with no outs.
Mirabile struck out Daniel Rodriguez before issuing a walk to Alex Vargas, putting the go-ahead run on base with one out. However, he struck out Ricky Barron and Eli Torres to end the threat.
“I was pulling off a bit, so it was just kind of a mechanical click,” Mirabile said of his pitching struggles in the sixth, “and then once I got to that, I was just able to pound the zone a little bit and get the next two outs.”
In the bottom of the sixth, Mirabile led off against Vigil, who was pitching well for Cabrillo. But after Vigil hit Mirabile with a pitch, Cabrillo replaced him on the mound with freshman Ethan Flemate.
With two men on and one out, Wilson’s Eddie Becker ripped a two-run triple to left field. Becker was also able to score on the play due to a throwing error.
Mirabile retired the side in the seventh with two more strikeouts.
Bruins head coach Andy Hall spoke highly of Mirabile’s performance.

“James has really started to turn the corner with his baseball skills and his ability,” said Hall. “He’s starting to discover that he’s a really good athlete and a really good baseball player. I like what he’s doing, I like what he does for us offensively. It’s comforting to know he’s going to come in and throw a couple of pitches for strikes, giving us a pretty good chance to finish the game.”
Wilson also got a strong start from left-hander Shane Guy. He allowed just one run on one hit and two walks while striking out eight over 3 2/3 innings.
Guy was seemingly in cruise control through the first three innings, retiring all nine batters he faced. He started to lose command in the fourth inning, issuing two walks to start the frame before surrendering his first hit, a single by Torres that drove in Rodriguez.
Cabrillo (7-2, 0-1) is off to a strong start for first-year head coach Murphy Su’a despite much of the team being freshmen.
One of those freshmen, Vigil, starred in Friday’s game. Vigil surrendered just four hits (all singles), three runs (only one earned), two walks and had two strikeouts over five-plus innings.
“My first day on the field, when I saw Fabian, I knew he was special,” said Su’a. “I didn’t realize, given the situation, that he would start our first league game against the defending champs. This is a freshman, a young man, but he’s been taught well. All of the coaches have been working with him since he was young.”
