The organization Amigos de los Ríos will host a morning of community stewardship on Saturday, March 14, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at San Rafael Elementary School. Volunteers will work in small groups to weed, mulch, and care for the school’s outdoor areas, helping bring more greenery and nature to the neighborhood campus.

Organizers say no experience is necessary to participate. Water and snacks will be provided, and community members are encouraged to bring family and friends to take part.

The campus itself is historic and faces a number of structural challenges. Some of those issues could be addressed in the near future through funding from Measure R Facilities.

More details about the proposed improvements to the campus are outlined in a recent editorial by Wesley Reutimann, a contributor to Colorado Boulevard and co-founder of Active San Gabriel Valley.

Community members interested in helping with the campus cleanup and planting effort can sign up online in advance. Organizers say the effort is part of a broader push to support local schools while creating greener spaces for Pasadena’s children.
