LAS VEGAS – The New Mexico Lobo men’s basketball team pulled triple-sevens Thursday night in Las Vegas, taking down the San Jose State Spartans in their first game in the Mountain West tournament.

The No. 3 Lobos earned a 93-77 win over the No. 11 Spartans. A legion of fans made the trip and matched the cherry-and-silver in the Sin City.

Thursday’s win not only advances the Lobos in the Mountain West tournament but it also builds momentum for their chances of making the NCAA tournament. The Lobos have made it the past two years under Richard Pitino – and head coach Eric Olen wants to keep that going under his watch.

“This game was awesome from the start. They played awesome from the start. The energy in here was great,” Olen told MW Network. “I liked the way we competed. We played hard for the full 40 minutes and our guys were dialed in and played great basketball.”

Next up for the Lobos is No. 2 seed San Diego State. They play Friday night at 10 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.

Devin J. Martin and Kenny Thomas are covering the event from the Thomas and Mack Center. This is Thomas’ first tournament as part of the media team.

“This is my first Mountain West Conference tournament, and without being a player, so the experience is interesting,” said Thomas.
