Ten Questions is a series in the Point Loma-OB Monthly that shines a spotlight on notable locals. This month’s featured personality is Glenn “Croc” Millar, president of Point Loma Summer Concerts, which recently received the Community Champion Award from the Point Loma Association.

Millar also is president and chief executive of Call Glenn Again Handyman and Home Services in Point Loma.

Q. What attracted you to the Point Loma-Ocean Beach area as a place to live and/or work?

A. My then-girlfriend, now-fiancée, Alexandra Watkins, and I came down here for a romantic trip in November 2017. We both love San Diego (she grew up here), so we decided to look at some houses just for grins. On the 10th house we walked into, Alexandra looked around and said “We’re buying this house.”

I took a step back: “Wait, what? We haven’t even decided if we are moving to San Diego yet. We don’t currently live together. We’ve only been dating for a year. I am not sure where in San Diego I want to live. This is insane!”

She replied, “I know, but we’re buying this house.”

So in the end we compromised … and bought the house 30 minutes later. Best decision I ever made, listening to Alexandra.

Q. What do you like to do in Point Loma and/or Ocean Beach?

A. We love this community. It’s literally the best place I’ve ever lived. I am the president of [Point Loma] Summer Concerts and Alexandra heads up business memberships for the PLA [Point Loma Association]. We go to local restaurants, take our dog JoJo to the beach, and lately we’ve enjoyed great shows at the Cygnet Theatre. It’s amazing what they’ve done there.

We also host a lot of parties and events at our house. We love entertaining in our tiki-themed backyard. Every time we think about going on vacation, we think “Why? We already live in paradise.”

Q. If you could snap your fingers and have it done, how might you improve the area?

A. Well, first let me say that the Point Loma Association and the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association already do a fantastic job of making this area an incredible place to live. That being said, I’d snap my fingers and create a new pier. Imagine a beautiful pier that becomes the jewel of this part of San Diego and makes OB once again a major tourist destination of America’s Finest City.

Q. Who or what inspires you?

A. People inspire me. Love inspires me. Community inspires me. I love making people happy. That’s why I joined the Summer Concerts board and then became president. The concerts are like living in a small town. You get to see all your friends on Friday night along with their families, enjoying music in the park. What could be better?

Q. If you hosted a dinner party for five guests, who (living or deceased) would you invite?

A. 1) My grandfather. I never knew him, but I heard he was a remarkable, giving man.

2) President Barack Obama. Imagine what I could learn in an hour.

3) President James Madison. “You know, James, when you were designing the Constitution, did you ever imagine it would last 250 years, and knowing what we know now, how would you change it? Oh, and how cool is it that they named a snack cake after your wife?”

4) Martin Luther King Jr. “We need your thoughts and words again.”

5) Ryan Reynolds. He’s funny, entertaining and a brilliant businessman.

Q. Tell us about what you are currently reading or watching on TV.

A. I read a lot of news. I follow current economic and political events with a passion. Then we binge-watch shows, mostly for escapism. Some favorites include “Ted Lasso,” “Brockmire” and “Tulsa King.”

Q. What would be your dream vacation?

A. I want to go into space. I’m just not sure I will live long enough for that to be affordable for the average American. But who knows?

Q. What are your five favorite movies of all time?

A. 1) “For Love of the Game.” Baseball movie starring Kevin Costner.

2) “Field of Dreams.” Baseball movie starring Kevin Costner (are we seeing a theme here?)

3) “Forrest Gump”

4) “Airplane”

5) “The Princess Bride”

Q. What is your most prized possession?

A. I collect old newspapers. I have a copy of the Chicago Tribune election-night newspaper dated Nov. 3, 1948, which declares in a big bold headline, “DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN.” (Spoiler alert: He didn’t.)

Q. What is your motto or philosophy of life?

A. I grew up Jewish, but I think Christ said it best: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

I believe if we all lived with that philosophy, the world would be a much better place.

Point Loma Summer Concerts plans to open its five-show 2026 season at Point Loma Park on July 10. More details will be posted at pointlomasummerconcerts.org.
