The challenges of coping with a persistent problem of homelessness in the community were underlined in a report presented to the Stanton City Council on Tuesday.

According to homeless outreach coordinators, 87.5 percent of the unhoused contacted by them in February declined offers of shelter; that’s 108 out of 123.

Two of the 123 were referred to interim housing, five received emergency motel assistance and five requests for shelter were “not attained.”

That statistic is similar to numbers from December 2025, in which 87 percent of the 96 people encountered declined offers of assistance.

The “hot spots” for homeless for February were listed as Western Street and Katella Avenue, Western and Cerritos Avenue, and Mercantile Avenue.

There were successes. Outreach coordinators were able to connect a middle-aged woman “experiencing long-term homelessness” with a shelter, and an elderly man with a history of short-term holds for mental health issues has been declared to be a “danger to himself and others” and has been taken to a facility “for further psychological evaluation and stabilization.”
