SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 65 LMU women’s tennis team delivered a strong fight on the road Sunday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center, but No. 37 San Diego used the early doubles point and a series of tightly contested singles victories to secure a 5-2 win over the Lions.
San Diego opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. The Torero pair of Anni Moll and Hannah Read defeated Ada Piestrzynska and Anastasia Bozova 6-3 at the No. 1 position, while Kristina Nordikyan and Charlotte Keitel earned a 6-1 victory over Kim-Michaela Zahraj and Helene Schnack at No. 3 doubles. The match at No. 2 doubles between Vilma Krebs Hyllested and Maria Shmakova and LMU’s Lidia Gonzalez and Sofia Perovani was left unfinished at 5-3 as USD secured the early 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
LMU responded with a pair of impressive comeback performances in singles. At the top of the lineup, Lidia Gonzalez battled back after dropping the opening set to defeat Charlotte Keitel 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), showcasing resilience in a tightly contested third-set tiebreak.
Kim-Michaela Zahraj also delivered a strong performance for the Lions at the No. 4 spot, rallying from a first-set deficit to earn a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Maria Shmakova to give LMU its second point of the match.
San Diego ultimately secured the remaining singles points to claim the match. No. 121 Hannah Read earned a straight-set victory over Anastasia Bozova at No. 3 singles, while Ines Leon and Anni Moll both rallied from first-set losses to defeat Helene Schnack and Sofia Perovani, respectively. Vilma KrebsHyllested sealed the Toreros’ final singles point with a three-set win over Ada Piestrzynska at the No. 2 position.
Despite the result, the Lions showed resilience throughout the lineup, highlighted by comeback singles victories from Gonzalez and Zahraj and several matches extending to decisive third sets in the road matchup against a nationally ranked San Diego squad.
