For the past several weeks, the Kansas men’s basketball team was expected to land on the 3/4 line in the NCAA Tournament.
Even as late as Sunday morning, Kansas coach Bill Self said he thought his team had earned a 4 seed.
On Sunday evening, that expectation and Self’s prediction proved accurate, when the Jayhawks (23-10) were announced as a No. 4 seed in the upcoming tournament.
Kansas was put into the East Region, where Duke is the No. 1 seed — and No. 1 overall in the entire tournament — and Self’s squad was actually shown on the very first screen of the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on CBS.
KU will play No. 13 seed California-Baptist on Friday at 8:45 p.m. central on CBS, 6:45 p.m. San Diego time.
The Jayhawks’ tourney opener — along with their 2nd-round game if they advance — will take place at Viejas Arena on the campus of San Diego State University.
Cal-Baptist (25-8) sits at No. 106 in the latest KenPom rankings and reached the tourney by winning the WAC tournament.
If the Jayhawks win in Round 1, they would play again sometime Sunday against the winner of St. John’s-Northern Iowa.
The top four seeds in the East Region feature two teams that KU already played this season — top-seeded Duke and No. 2 seed Connecticut — and No. 3 seed Michigan State.
Kansas played both of those teams without star freshman Darryn Peterson and fell each time. First, to Duke at the Champions Classic in New York City and then to UConn at home in early December.
Asked whether he liked KU’s draw after the bracket was finalized, Kansas coach Bill Self jokingly said, “I’ve never liked a draw.” Self then went on to explain that he does think KU’s region is as tough as it gets, given that Duke is the No. 1 overall seed, No. 2 UConn was on the 1 line as recently as a day or two ago, Michigan State was a projected 2 seed for most of the month and ended up a 3.
He also noted that, 5th-seeded St. John’s, which will face No. 12 Northern Iowa in Round 1 on Friday, is as hot as any team out there, having won the Big East regular season and tournament titles and beaten UConn twice.
All that said, Self said he “good with whatever,” regarding the draw, the matchup, the strength of the region or the location of KU’s Round 1 game because, as he has learned plenty of times over throughout the years, anything can happen anywhere, whether you expect it, want it or not.
To that end, he added that he was happy to see KU slotted into a Friday/Sunday region because it gives them another day to prepare before the start of the tournament.
“We could used some practice time,” he noted.
In the bigger picture of KU’s conference brothers, No. 1 seed Arizona led a Big 12 Conference record-tying eight teams selected to the tourney. Joining the Wildcats and Jayhawks, in this year’s field are: No. 2 Houston, No. 2 Iowa State, No. 5 Texas Tech, No. 6 BYU, No. 9 TCU and No. 10 UCF.
