OAKLAND — A dirt bike rider shot a man who was a passenger in a car Sunday night in East Oakland, authorities said.
The 26-year-old victim, an Oakland resident, was in stable condition at a hospital where he was being treated for a wound to his neck, authorities said.
The shooting happened about 7:47 p.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of 66th Avenue.
According to initial police reports, the man was a front seat passenger in a car that also contained two other men.
The vehicle was surrounded by more than 10 dirt bikers and one of them, a male, fired several shots at the vehicle, striking the 26-year-old man. Neither of the other two men in the vehicle were injured, authorities said.
The driver of the car was able to drive several blocks, hitting some parked vehicles along the way, before stopping in the 2100 block of 66th Avenue where police and medical personnel were called, authorities said.
The shooting prompted the activation of a gunshot detection alert system. Numerous shell casings were recovered at the scene.
Why the man was shot is under investigation. Detailed descriptions of the shooter and the dirt bike he was riding have not been released.
