You wake up on a bright March morning, and you check the forecast for the day. Just like last week, the sun is out, warm and shining, all week long. All you want to do is lie down on the grass the whole entire day, but you realize you have pages upon pages of assigned reading to do. You didn’t want to buy the $35 reader for your class, but you definitely don’t want to be squinting at your laptop while sunbathing, hunched over trying to read through the glare on your screen at your downloaded PDFs. The solution? To go find a printer where you can print out a ton of pages to take with you.
There are many printing options around campus that allow you to connect your phone and pay for printing, but when you’re printing large amounts, the cost can quickly add up. Here are three free, convenient locations that provide UC Berkeley students with select amounts of free printed pages, so you won’t ever have to pay for printing again!
Open Computing Facility
The Open Computing Facility, or OCF, is the most well-known resource, located right in 171 of the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union. Here, UC Berkeley students can print 200 free pages per semester, with a limit of 20 pages per day. Once you’re there, create an OCF account so that you can print and see how many pages you have left for the day or semester. If you need more pages printed, ask a friend who has extra pages they won’t be using.
Berkeley Public Library
Public libraries are an underutilized resource, and the Berkeley Public Library is no exception. While not on campus, there are two locations nearby at 2090 Kittredge St. (a 10-minute bus ride from campus) and 2940 Benvenue Ave. (an eight-minute bus ride from campus). Here at our local library, you can print up to 40 pages in black and white for free per day, or eight color pages per day. You can log in as a guest to print, but you might as well get yourself a Berkeley Public Library card while you’re there.
Campus resource centers
On-campus resource centers, such as the Queer Alliance Resource Center and the Multicultural Community Center, offer many services to the community, including free printing. QARC is located in the Heart Field Annex, and the MCC, which just recently reopened, is located in Suite No. 220 of the student union building. For more information on their specific printing resources, check out their Instagrams, @ucbqarc and @mccinterns, respectively.
Printing pages for reading doesn’t have to drain your bank account. With these free resources, you can get back to enjoying the sunshine, paper readings in hand.
