BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A woman is dead after being struck by a motorist who fled the scene in south Bakersfield on Saturday.

Pedro Contreras, 42, was arrested for charges related to vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run causing death, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

Police said the crash occurred at about 9:50 p.m., in the 200 block of Belle Terrace.

When officers arrived on scene, they determined the woman was on the south shoulder of the roadway and was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound. Witnesses said the vehicle involved was a dark sedan.

Bakersfield police believe speed and impairment were factors in the collision.

Contreras was arrested a short time after the incident, according to police.

The identity of the woman will be released by the Kern County Coroner’s Office.
