Kristin Stokes is heading back to her old Bay Area stamping grounds, performing as part of the national tour of “MJ” at the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco March 24-April 5.
Stokes, who hails from Fremont, has a prime role in this Tony-Award-winning hit musical about Michael Jackson, which specifically focuses on the making of the pop star’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour.
She plays Rachel, the MTV journalist who interviews Jackson during rehearsals for this big world tour. Her character serves as a narrator figure, pushing the “King of Pop” to divulge details from his personal life.
Many longtime Bay Area theatergoers will be familiar with Stokes, who has performed professionally with numerous local theater group — including San Francisco Playhouse, Marin Theatre Company, Aurora Theatre and TheatreWorks Silicon Valley.
She also took some classes at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco before heading off to to New York to try her luck on Broadway.
It should be a real treat for her to perform at the Orpheum — a place where she attended numerous touring Broadway shows while growing up.
Stokes graduated from Mission San Jose High School in Fremont.
And theater most definitely runs in her blood: She’s the daughter of Lori Stokes, who is the founding artistic director of youth performing arts group StarStruck in Fremont.
Stokes will be working with Jordan Markus, who plays the title role of MJ in this production. Markus is an original cast member of this tour and made both his Broadway and national tour debuts playing the roles of MJ and Michael in this musical.
