FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Year after year, Arte Américas in Downtown Fresno features detailed and unique altars, known as ofrendas, in honor of Day of the Dead, a special weekend for millions throughout the world.

“There are all kinds of emotions that come up for people during this time of year. We make time to remember folks that are not with us,” says Executive Director Arianna Paz Chávez.

This year, the theme is “Figuras Monumentales,” meaning monumental figures.

When you walk through the front door, your eyes will quickly spot the creativity and diversity among the 11 altars.

Chávez says they were intentional about getting the word out to everyone during application season.

“Thinking about the power of the invitation.” said Chávez. “The result of that effort was an exhibition that really highlights solidarity across different social movements and community efforts.”

While most of the altars in this creative space are by Latino artists featuring Hispanic icons like Paquita La Del Barrio, Chávez says some local collectives responded to their call.

“We were thrilled that Maarte responded; they are a local Filipino-led organization,” she said.

On the other side of the room, there is an altar remembering Ralph Gnat.

“He is a person who worked at Fresno City College and inspired students,” Chávez said. “Prior to his career, he was a member of the Black Panther party.”

Also on display is an altar honoring the late Joseph Castro, who served as former Fresno State president and California State University chancellor.

He passed away in August after battling cancer.

“We are grateful to his family for their involvement and support,” Chávez said.

Outside, you will notice 20-foot-tall animal sculptures known as Alebrijes and Nahuales, inspired by the original pieces you can also learn about inside.

The altars will be on display until November 23.
