PEORIA, Ariz. — The Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 3-1 on Monday at Peoria Stadium.

Batters box: At tird base again as the Padres await the return of Manny Machado, Miguel Andujar plated the game’s first run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. He went 0-for-2 before he was lifted. … Right fielder Bryce Johnson went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the sixth inning and first baseman Ty France (1-for-3) singled in a run in a three-run third. … Center fielder Jackson Merrill went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and shortstop Xander Bogaerts went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout. … DH Nick Schnell went 1-for-3 and stole his first base.

Balls and strikes: Right-hander Walker Buehler pushed his pitch count to 77 (45 strikes) while throwing five shutout innings in his best start yet. He struck out seven and scattered three hits, two walks and a hit batter in lowering his ERA to 3.09. … Right-hander Jeremiah Estrada struck out two over a scoreless inning, keeping his ERA at a pristine 0.00. … Left-hander Jackson Wolf allowed a run in two innings on three hits and two walks. He struck out one. … Right-hander Ty Adcock, out of game action since Feb. 28 because of an oblique injury, allowed a leadoff triple in the ninth in his return to the mound, but he stranded him there with a scoreless frame. He struck out one.

Extra bases: Johnson, the likely leading candidate for a bench outfield job based on last year’s production, made a diving catch in right field to strand one of Buehler’s runners at third base in the third inning. … Luis Campusano threw out the trail runner of a double steal to end Buehler’s fifth inning.

On deck: Right-hander Germán Márquez will start the 1:10 p.m. game in Peoria against the Seattle Mariners. Right-hander Matt Waldron will also pitch in the game, as will relievers David Morgan and Adrián Morejón.
