EXCLUSIVE: Liberation, Bess Wohl‘s critically acclaimed Broadway play, will be performed in select major markets as a multi-theater co-production in 2027, including at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles in January.

The Geffen staging will run from January 27, 2027, through February 28, 2027. Additional venues and participating in the co-production, performance dates and casting will be announced at a later date.

In a statement, Wohl said, “Liberation continuing its life beyond Broadway is thrilling. The chance to connect with new audiences across the country is incredibly exciting – and it’s especially meaningful to share this news during Women’s History Month. The play honors generations before us who fought to create a better, more just world, and reminds us that their work is far from finished.”

Said director Whitney White, “It is a great joy that Liberation will be performed in new markets next season. Liberation provides a glimpse at a very special time in the women’s movement, when daring to ask for more came with great personal risk. The play gives me great courage now, and I hope it will do the same for new audiences across the country.”

Liberation began preview performance at Broadway’s James Earl Jones Theatre on October 8, 2025, opening October 28 and playing through February 1, 2026. The production recently was named Outstanding Broadway Production at the 37th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, and is a likely shoo-in for Tony Award nominations.

The Geffen Playhouse is announcing its staging today; Deadline is breaking the news about plans for additional productions.

The play topped Deadline’s 10 Best Broadway Shows of 2025.

The synopsis: “1970s, Ohio. Lizzie gathers a group of women to talk about changing their lives, and the world. What follows is a necessary, messy, and bitingly funny exploration of what it means to be free, and to be a woman. In Liberation, Lizzie’s daughter steps into her mother’s memory – into the unfinished revolution she once helped ignite – and searches the past to find the answer for herself.”

The Broadway and, prior to that, the Off Broadway production starred Betsy Aidem, Audrey Corsa, Kayla Davion, Susannah Flood, Kristolyn Lloyd, Irene Sofia Lucio, Charlie Thurston and Adina Verson.
