There’s a quiet corner of SoCal where arched bridges, koi ponds, and carefully sculpted landscapes automatically take you to Japan without the hassle to go through LAX or the need to carry your passport.

A little over two hours from L.A., San Diego’s Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum (JFGM) is about to hit peak bloom, as its cherry trees prepare to burst into soft shades of pink. It’s one of the closest things to a springtime hanami experience you’ll find in the region.

Peak bloom is just around the corner

The garden is home to around 200 cherry trees, many of them concentrated in the lower garden. These trees are not only stunning but also a “botanical piece of engineering”, as this species typically needs cold winters to bloom properly, something San Diego simply doesn’t provide.

To get around that, the garden uses specially developed hybrid grafted trees that can reliably flower in mild coastal conditions. That’s why this bloom is such a big deal locally: outside of curated spaces like this, sakura basically don’t happen around here.

Once peak bloom hits, it usually lasts about one to two weeks, so timing your visit is key! At the moment, the bloom percentage sits around 44%.

A lush oasis with deep cultural roots

The garden officially opened in 1990–1991, but the idea dates back to the late 1970s, when community efforts and support from Japan helped bring the project to life. One of the earliest symbolic gestures came in 1977, when Yokohama gifted San Diego 100 cherry trees, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become the garden’s signature feature.

The space we see today is much larger than the original. A major expansion completed in 2015 added about 9 acres, bringing the total to roughly 11–12 acres and introducing the lower garden where most of the cherry blossoms now live.

Beyond the cherry trees, the garden offers tranquil koi ponds, stone lanterns, and winding pathways that lead to meditation corners, providing quiet spots to reflect or photograph.
